DEFRA has released the new set of General Licences for England that come into effect on the 1st of January 2021.  Be aware that there are separate licences for operating in Wales and Scotland.

The three main English Licences are GL40, GL41 and GL42. Additionally, GL33 gives you the conditions for trapping birds in Ladder and Larsen type traps and using and caring for live decoys.

You do not have to apply for the General Licences, but you do have to read, understand, and adhere to the conditions contained in them. It is important that you understand which licence each species can be controlled under and why.

Each licence has specific rules about its use on or near listed protected sites. Each listed European Protected site has a buffer zone around it, and you must comply to the additional conditions if you are using this licence on a European site or in its buffer zone. The list of the protected sites, the additional conditions and their buffer zones can be seen in all the licences in Condition 5, Table 2.

Ladder traps (which are also known as letterbox traps) can either be pre baited before setting or used like a traditional Larsen Trap with a call bird. Once crows enter the trap through the ladder, they will be unable to leave again thanks to the sloped shape of the trap's roof and the carefully spaced ladder rungs. Flexible skirts are now fitted around the inside of the ladder for extra security. Ladder traps have been in use across the country for many years and have taken a variety of different forms. This trap unites the best qualities of its predecessors, offering greater efficiency and simplicity of use than ever before. Suitable for catching rooks, carrion crows, magpies and jackdaws all at once, these traps are the ultimate in avian vermin control. Unlike other prefabricated ladder traps on the market, the Solway Ladder trap is not cumbersome or heavy.

Designed to be easy to assemble and move around, our ladder traps are perfect for finding the most efficient spot to catch. They are supplied in flat pack and are easy to assemble using heavy duty cable ties.

The Solway Ladder Trap was introduced in 2012 and has proved a popular and reliable catching tool. Hand made in our joinery workshops, these traps can catch dozens of crows in a single setting, yet are lightweight and portable enough to be dismantled and moved around by a single person.
