Wild bird feeding is important to bird populations at certain times of year when food sources may be scarce. During the winter months they need high energy, high fat foods to help maintain their fat reserves particularly during frosty nights. Small birds are particularly susceptible to cold, fat balls and peanuts are a good source of energy during winter months.
During spring and summer, birds need high protein foods. Black sunflower seeds, mealworm blocks and good seed mixtures are all available from Solway Feeders. Avoid peanuts, bread and fats as these can be harmful if the adult birds feed to chicks. Hygiene is important and bird feeders should be cleaned regularly to avoid a build up of bacteria, mould or toxins. A variety of feeding stations will help meet different bird’s preferences, Solway stock a good range of feeders suitable for seed and peanuts. Feeding stations are best located near cover if possible and out of the way of predators such as cats.
Always wash your hands after handling feeding stations.
